Condition 1: Subject to any prohibitions or restrictions contained in any other condition(s), the designated centre shall be operated at all times in accordance with the Statement of Purpose within the footprint of the designated centre on the floor plan received on 12/03/26. The registered provider shall only provide for the specific care and support needs, and services, within the facilities as set out the Statement of Purpose, as agreed with the Chief Inspector at the time of registration. Any changes to the specific care and support needs and services provided must be agreed in advance with the Chief Inspector. Condition 2: Only persons aged 18 years or older shall be accommodated at the designated centre at any time. Condition 3: The maximum number of persons that may be accommodated at the designated centre is: 48

What the latest inspection found

St Joseph's Home is a well-maintained nursing home near Killorglin, Kerry, providing 24-hour care for up to 48 older residents. Residents generally spoke positively about the respectful and kind care from staff and enjoyed the activities offered. However, there were ongoing problems with call bell systems in bedrooms and bathrooms, which had not been fixed for eight months, affecting residents' ability to get help when needed. Management has been slow to address this and other issues like complaints handling and incident reporting. Food and healthcare services were good, and the home had a calm, friendly atmosphere.

What needed to improve

Call bell systems in bedrooms and bathrooms have been malfunctioning for eight months, limiting residents' ability to summon help.
Complaints are not consistently recorded or addressed in a timely manner.
Some incidents, including unexpected deaths, were not reported to the Chief Inspector as required.
Fire drills do not demonstrate that residents can be evacuated quickly when staffing is at its lowest.
