How we calculate this score

Every regulation HIQA judged on an inspection earns points: Compliant 100, Substantially compliant 65, Not compliant 25.
Where the compliance plan rates the risk of a failing regulation, orange (moderate risk) takes off 15 more points and red (high risk) takes off 40. Yellow (low risk) takes off nothing.
An inspection's score is the average over the regulations it looked at.
A home's score combines its last 3 inspections: the newest counts for 50%, the one before for 30% and the one before that for 20%. With fewer inspections the weights are scaled up to 100%.
The trend compares the newest inspection's score with the average of the earlier ones: 5 points or more higher is improving, 5 or more lower is declining, anything else is stable.
Homes are ranked by score within their county and among scored homes within 25 km. Homes with the same score share a rank.

Method v1. It uses only HIQA's published judgments, not our opinion, and is recalculated whenever a new report is published.

What the latest inspection found

Firstcare Beneavin House is a large nursing home in Dublin providing 24-hour care for 150 residents, including those with dementia. Residents generally appeared happy and spoke positively about the kind and caring staff. Bedrooms and communal areas were clean and well maintained, with adequate space and facilities. However, there were concerns about management oversight, delays in complaints handling, and some safety issues with storage and medication records. Activities and visiting arrangements were good, and infection control and fire safety were well managed.

Long-term care
Dementia care

What inspectors liked

Residents spoke positively about kind and caring staff.
Bedrooms and communal areas were clean and well maintained.
There was a good activity schedule and residents enjoyed exercise classes.
Infection prevention and control practices were strong and regularly reviewed.
Fire safety arrangements were suitable with regular drills and clear procedures.

What needed to improve

Complaints were not managed promptly or according to policy, with many open for over 30 days.
Notifications of incidents to the Chief Inspector were delayed, not meeting required timeframes.
Management oversight was not robust, with repeated non-compliance in governance and supervision, especially at night.
Some storage practices posed safety and infection risks, such as hoists blocking bathroom access and trip hazards in activity rooms.
Care plans lacked sufficient detail to guide care, especially for infections and weight loss, and some staff had not completed safeguarding training.

What residents said

“Staff are kind”
“Call-bells are answered in a timely fashion”
“Staff are caring”
“Bedrooms are cleaned daily”

Staffing: Staffing levels and skill mix were appropriate for residents' needs on the day of inspection, with clinical supervision on each floor. However, night-time supervision was sometimes lacking, with no senior nurse on duty for some nights.
Activities: There was an activity schedule in place, and residents enjoyed activities such as exercise classes. Some residents chose to stay in their rooms and staff respected their wishes.
Food: Residents gave mainly positive feedback about food and choice, though some noted that morning breakfast toast was never warm. Management was reviewing this issue following resident feedback.
Dementia: Has a dedicated dementia unit. Claremont Walk unit is dedicated to residents living with dementia and is designed specifically to meet their needs. Care plans for managing challenging behaviour showed improvements with clear triggers and de-escalation techniques.
